30 Pound Platter

I love making Platters this is the largest size I make, wet they are made out of 30 pounds of clay and are 24 inches wide and about 4 inches deep. I make them so when they shrink they will fit on a 24 inch kiln shelf. I wish I cloud make them bigger but that would mean a bigger shelf and then a bigger kiln, some day....... They are made to hang on the wall or outside. The front of my shop is covered with them one day maybe the whole building will see...... I'll be making some more in smaller sizes too these will be painted with imagery and fired in the salt glazing kiln with more pots, some turtles and other animals I'm working on. Oh and today I had the doors hanging wide open!! It hit 68 degrees today saw some flies and mosquito crazy!!!!

i've been wanting to go there but i guess i didn't think i would need 30lbs. to start with. last one i tried was with about 15lbs. and it didn't go well. how much does the platter weigh at the end of the glaze firing?

Very nice. What kind of clay are you using?

Ron, The bat I through on is about 18 inches and the one I use to trim the foot is about 26 inches.
Jim, I think the weight is about 8-10 pounds when finished.
Dirt-Kicker, I mix my own its a tile-6 kaolin fires fairly white and flashes nicely.

Show off! ;)
Do you always throw standing up or is that just for platter time?

Yep! I always throw standing up.... Its a real back saver, thats the way all the old-timers do it figure they must know something.
Speaking of old-timers Nancy, Happy birthday!! and don't worry 38's not so bad. I liked it enough, thinking I might try it for another year though. ;-)

Thanks Blaine!
I haven't thrown in years because my back is so bad. I did a real number on it in a very short amount of time. I might give the standing option a try some time. I've been itching to throw again - though it will be like starting over for me. I'll need some lessons for sure.

I was just up at Clay Mix in Fresno the other day Yosuke Koizumi had done a demo and threw a 25 pound bowl, it must have been 2.5 feet across and I was in awe, now you have wowed me even more.

Hey Blaine! It would be awesome to see you throw one of your huge platters in person! I hope you post a picture of it when completed!
